Week 2: Going Global Home Decor

{Edited on October 3, 2014: Since posting, Going Global has gone 100% web-based.  While the bricks and mortar shop is no longer there, you can still browse Martia’s selection of global wares on her website, and at local fairs and festivals!}

Where do savvy shoppers in and around Kemptville go for exotic, handmade accessories for themselves and their homes?

Going Global Home Decor, that’s where!

Sandwiched between Gabriel’s Pizza and Shoppers Drug Mart, Going Global specializes in unique home accessories and is a mecca of cotton scarves, colourful handbags, and jewellery from Mexico, India, and Nepal.

The Famous Wall of Scarves

Joe and I first visited the shop last March to find a birthday gift for my Mom.  After a warm welcome from vivacious Going Global owner Martia Toppozini, a fuchsia silk purse caught my eye.  Within minutes, it was wrapped up and we were ready to go…though we kinda wanted to stay and chat with Martia all day!  Months later, the purse is in great shape and is still in heavy rotation.  Mom loves it!  This is the kind of success story that Martia loves to hear.  “I feel such a surge of pride when I see my products on people in town,” she says with a smile.  “It feels great to help my customers find the perfect gift for the special people in their lives.”

An interior designer by trade, Martia has a passion for handmade furniture and accessories that provide craftspeople with sustainable work in a trade that will help them support themselves, their families, and their communities.  “It’s amazing what people create with the resources that are available to them,” she says.  Her suppliers are craftspeople, as well as co-ops that provide work for people who have been affected by disease, war, and other hardships.  They support community development projects that bring health programs, education, and adult literacy initiatives to those in need.

Every item at Going Global is handpicked by Martia and she only orders three of four of each one, so you won’t see the same tablecloth or elegant wooden vase at all your friends’ houses!  Not only are her products unique, they are also easy to care for.  All of the linens are hand washable and the silver can be cleaned with a cloth…no evil-smelling silver solution needed!

For those who live far away, Going Global also sells its jewellery, scarves, and purses online – with free shipping!

Now entering its fourth year in business, Going Global is going strong thanks to the store’s exotic yet practical wares, reasonable prices, and loyal customers.  The friendly vibe in Going Global will keep you coming back too!

    It is really something to hear how much Kemptville has grown in its shopping selections! You should be writing for a magazine like “In the Hills” http://www.inthehills.ca/. I am sure you have something similar in the Ottawa Valley.

      Thanks for reading, Andrée! Can you believe it only gets better? When we moved back after living in Ottawa for a decade I was astounded at how much the town has changed. There’s lots to see and do!
